Dinner of suspense (*video*)
Not all of us survived our lunch date with 1909 Edwardian Johannesburg high society couple Henry and Julia Beaufort and their friends.
Over a three course-meal Paul Spence and Annie Robinson took us back in time to a dinner party in the Beaufort’s Randlord mansion which sets the scene for an ensuing murder mystery that claimed the life of one unsuspecting party at the table.
The Strange Case of Hester Cilliers offered us an enchantingly interactive theatre experience with the actors engaging with us in various dialogues and question-and-answer sessions throughout the performance.
“The task is for you to figure out who did it and why,” Spence told our animated audience yesterday. “We are going to give you clues and red herrings, and you are going to have to sort through them and make a decision,” he told us. And clues and red herrings there were.
For the next three hours Spence and co-star Robinson transported us back to a time when high society and gold barons lurked behind sordid secrets and tales of intrigue.
A quality performance by Royal Shakespeare Company-trained Spence depicts the journey of unlikely detective Michael Buchan’s quest for truth surrounding an inscrutable murder committed after an extravagant dinner at Henry and Juliet Beaufort’s mansion.
Suspects
Set against a lavish backdrop of rich materials depicting an early 1900 dining room, we were treated to a deliciously absorbing plot-line with a list of potential suspects whose reasons for murder were each as good as the other.
Was it Fleetwood Rawthorne, the Australian diamond dealer, or Konstant Grabouw, the gardener with a limp from his involvement in the Boer War, or Lady Eva Hochenheim, the blonde German widow who has green eyes and an emerald to match?
The intimate venue encouraged shared deliberation between audience members about who the culprit was, and each table presented their predicted verdict to the group, to the amusement of other audience members, Spence and Robinson.
Robinson, a Vita Award nominee, said the structure of the production is aimed at enhancing the theatre experience so that the audience can feel at home in an intimate space and participate to a certain extent in the production.
“You can do more subtle things with acting when people are close to you, and this setting is perfect for what we are trying to do,” she said.
Julian Vooght of Durban, in the audience, said there was a good atmosphere and that the meal “aided participation really nicely”.
Veronica Baxter of Pietermaritzburg said she found the performance to be “good fun and cleverly constructed, but probably slightly taxing after a bottle of wine”.
